How to Properly File an Insurance Claim

Insurance Claim FormIf you live in Canada and drive a car, having car insurance is required by law. At some point, a person that owns car insurance will probably have to file a claim. This claim can result in reimbursement for damage to the car, medical bills and other expenses that are covered by a person’s policy.

However, to obtain this reimbursement, you must first know how to properly file a car insurance claim. Below is an explanation of how to do just that.First, you should be aware of all laws regarding auto insurance in your province or territory. One of these laws regards your conduct directly after being involved in a car accident. If you are involved in a car accident, you are required by law to contact your insurance company immediately to report the accident. This should be done right after you contact the police. This should be done even if you don’t pay for the insurance that covers that vehicle. This is why anyone who drives a vehicle should be aware of the fact they should quickly call the insurance company that does cover the car if there is an accident.

Once you call the insurance company, you will be connected to someone known as a “claim representative.” You should alert this claim representative of the fact you were in an accident. The representative will also ask some questions. You should answer all of these questions truthfully. This will make the job of the claim representative easier and allow that representative to give you the best advice possible for your specific situation.

One thing you should certainly tell the representative is just how much damage your vehicle actually sustained in the crash. You will also be asked many other questions relating to the accident. After this phone call, the process of producing a documented claim will begin. However, the agent can’t do all of the work for you. You will also have to be involved in filing the claim.

This will involve filing paperwork with your insurance company. On the claim form, you will need to include a good deal of information that you should remember to collect at the time of the crash. This will include where the accident took place, the names and addresses of any other drivers involved in the accident, and the names and addresses of any witnesses.

You may also be asked to provide much more information than this. For example, giving the insurance company a copy of the police report may be required. You may even be asked to include a photo of the accident. For this reason, taking a picture of the crash with your cell phone can be very helpful.

Over all, make sure to gather all the information and paperwork the insurance company requests of you. You should also be aware of any deadlines for filing this paperwork so you can avoid any issues. Also find out how long it will take for the claim to be settled. Usually, the time-frame for this is one week.

The insurance company will also likely take further steps to assess the damage to your car and to determine how much you should be reimbursed. Make sure to cooperate willingly with anything the insurance company asks of you.

It’s also very helpful to be knowledgeable of exactly what your coverage provides. What kind of coverage you have is extremely important. With collision coverage or comprehensive coverage, the insurance company will be required to pay the claim no matter who was actually responsible for the accident. Liability coverage, however, is different. It protects you against claims that may be made by other drivers that accuse you of being responsible for the accident.

Driven To Distraction

Distracted Driving

Distracted Driving

We always see the aftermath of a automobile accident; crumpled metal, a scattering of broken glass, police cars and tow trucks. We watch the drivers exchanging information and examining the damage. Then we drive on. We may be able to guess how the accident occurred from the way the wrecked cars are positioned and where the damage is, but the truth of the matter is that an automobile accident has to do with so much more than where the damage was done, but also why.

There seem to be more distractions than ever when it comes to driving. Not only must we be aware of what’s going on outside of the vehicle, but inside of the vehicle as well. MP3 players, phones, makeup and reading devices are now vying for our attention while we are behind the wheel. While it isn’t necessary to indulge in a text message or phone call, many drivers are under the illusion that they are, an illusion that’s blinding them to the reality that changing the music or reading the newspaper while behind the wheel can prove to be a dangerous indulgence.

The Statistics

Many states have laws against texting and driving, but that hasn’t deterred several drivers from tapping away on their phones to tell friends they are running late, or asking their spouse what they’d like for dinner. Studies show that driving distractions account for a majority of crashes and near crashes. A 2011 study conducted by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that over 70% of accidents and over 50% of near-accidents occurred from driver distraction; in most cases the distraction occurring within only a few seconds before the automobile accident.  Kanetix reported that 70% of Canadian drivers recently admitted to driving while distracted.

The study concluded that the leading distractions were reaching for a moving object, cell phone use, putting on makeup, looking away from the road and reading. Drivers who use a hands-free device for their cellphone and think their chances of being involved in an accident are lowered should know that simply using a handheld device isn’t safer than using your hands to hold the phone. The amount of accidents and near accidents for drivers dialing is mostly the same for drivers who listen and talk. A distraction is a distraction. It’s recommended that drivers make and finish calls before driving, or just allow the caller to leave a message.

It’s Not Just Cellphones and Music

There are other distractions to consider besides cellphones, makeup, books and MP3 players. Eating while driving may not seem anymore dangerous than driving with one hand, but while eating you’re also unwrapping, opening, reaching and wiping, not to mention twisting and sipping if you want something to drink. While driving with one hand you can always quickly slap your hand back on the steering wheel if necessary. Eating may involve dropping both food and drink and then putting your hand back on the wheel, an action that may cause you the few precious seconds necessary to avoid an accident.

Tickets, collisions, increasing insurance rates and the possibility of a fatality don’t seem to be enough to keep drivers from being distracted. So what, if anything, will? Have we really become so swept up in our personal lives and jobs that we risk our safety and the safety of others to check an office e-mail, take unimportant calls and take our eyes from the road and hands from the steering wheel to find a song? Maybe we should strive to remember what it was like when we were first learning how to drive, how we learned to give our full attention to the road and the vehicles around us. We’ve become so comfortable with driving that we no longer have the same sense of reverence we once had for the act of driving. And maybe it’s time that we started heading back for that road.

Benefits Of Comparing Quotes

Individuals considering the purchase of insurance for their car, their home or their life are naturally concerned about the rising cost of premiums, and often are not sure about where to get the best rates. Comparing the cost of similar policies from a number of different providers is the best way to get the latest information, and this can be done online. The reputable comparison sites compete with each other for traffic and therefore cannot afford to make false promises that do not result in a sale. But before doing any actual comparison, consumers should make sure they have all the necessary documents handy, and be ready to delve a little deeper than the original insurance quotes given in order to find out exactly what is truly being offered and at what price.

Benefits Of Auto Insurance Comparison Shopping
Most everyone needs to have automobile insurance, as liability is required in nearly all areas, and when a new car is financed, the complete collision and comprehensive package is needed to satisfy the lender. When visiting an online comparison site, sometimes all that is entered is the age of the driver and the location where the car is parked at night. Many insurance providers feel this is a good starting point, because their rates are heavily dependent on the answers to these two questions. It does not necessarily mean an instant quote, however. Often the consumer is fed information from a number of companies simultaneously, and the price for a liability plus collision package may not be entirely accurate. This is not meant to frustrate, but rather serve as a transitional point, where the customer will now link directly with each company to fill out further information fields. These fields will usually deal with things such as the actual make and model of the vehicle, the marital status of the individual, whether he or she owns or rents the home, how many miles are put on the car each week and what extras are included with the automobile purchase. This could be an anti-theft system, navigation programming or specialized trimming.

Not all insurance providers will look at each factor equally, and this is why comparison shopping is so helpful. One company may offer a 6-month policy that totals $650, but with a larger down payment of $200 and five subsequent payments of $90 each. Another company may ask for only six equal payments of $120, but in the latter case the total for six months will be $720. These differences are usually based in what the insurance provider feels the actual risk to be. In the example above, the first company wants more money up front, most likely because the driver is younger or has no history of carrying the proper coverage. The second company does not weigh this factor as heavily, but does ask for more over the six months because they are factoring in the probable amount of cash on hand, and use this to entice an agreement where money is saved today, but more is paid over time.

Homeowners Insurance
The same thing applies here, and individuals can reap great savings by getting different insurance quotes from a comparison site. The following factors: age, whether a couple is married, how many dependents and if the family is considering combining the homeowner policy with automobile coverage are not always taken into account the same way by individual providers.

Life Insurance Quotes
Most people benefit from term life insurance when they are younger and are just starting out on their career, are now raising their firstborn and are carrying a heavy debt on their home. These policies are relatively cheap, but of course they cannot be cashed out as opposed to a whole life insurance policy. Both term and whole life costs are dependent on the insurance provider’s business platform, so things such as medical history or occupational hazards do not apply equally. Again, getting a comparison quote and then contacting the companies individually is the best bet for receiving honest answers. In many cases the original quote is not accurate, but this is because most of the required information has not yet been entered. Those shopping for life insurance can make as many inquiries as they like regarding different amounts of coverage and what it is truly needed for. Burial costs are expensive, yet they can be covered with a smaller whole life policy even if the policy itself is not initiated before age 60.

The most important thing to remember is that the initial quote may or may not be correct, but this is not the fault of the comparison site webmaster. The benefits of using this type of service include direct linking to a number of companies and rapid response once the required information has been submitted. Although it takes a bit of time, this practice offers the best chance for finding the lowest rates available for the exact type of coverage desired.

Highway Collision – What Should You Do When It Happens To You?

Highway Car CollisionAccidents can happen to anyone, even you, so you should think about how you will handle the situation. One day the worst might happen. Sooner or later either you or another driver will make a mistake or become distracted and end up in a wreck. What you do in the aftermath has financial, legal and medical repercussions.

Get Prepared in Advance

Take the time now to clean out your glove box and get your paperwork together. You need to keep your vehicle’s registration and insurance information on top of all the other stuff for easy access. Other things to keep in the car include a disposable camera to take photographs for evidence, a note pad or a pre-preprinted accident information form. Flashlights, first aid kits and safety cones are among the other items drivers should have on hand.

Stay at the Scene

When involved in a collision, remain on the scene. Some people might panic and instinctively flee, but everyone should take responsibility for their role in a crash, even if they caused it. Besides, leaving the scene of an accident could result in criminal charges, fines and other penalties, so make up your mind you will stay. Accidents are part of life, so you will neither be the first nor the last driver to deal with them. Whether a wreck is your fault or not, stay calm.

Be Safe, Check for Injuries

Assess the situation. Check on the condition of other parties involved in the collision. If someone was injured, be sure to call for emergency help right away. Move cars out of the road if everyone is safe and the cars can move. If not, occupants should remain in their vehicles with their safety restraints on. If the wreck happened on a busy road, passersby have probably already reported it. After you finish assessing and clearing the situation, you can call for help just to make sure.

Get Information and Document the Event

Never admit fault in the accident while on the scene. Don’t apologize for causing the crash and don’t tell the police that it was you fault. The police, the insurance companies and the traffic court will decide that.

After checking on the other driver’s condition, you should know their disposition. Some drivers could become very agitated after a wreck, especially if they think you caused it. In such a case, you should probably wait until the police arrive to talk. However, if all the parties seem civil, you can exchange information needed to complete claims. Get the names, addresses, phone numbers of the parties involved as well as their insurance information.

If any witnesses stop on the scene, get their contact information too. Take photographs of all the cars involved and then write down information about the vehicles involved, the location of the incident and the circumstances surrounding the collision.

File an Accident Report

Budget cuts have forced some localities to stop sending police to investigate injury-free accidents. This means that you and the other drivers will have to handle the situation on your own. After you get on with your life, visit the state DMV website for an accident report form. Fill it out and mail it. You can also visit the nearest police department to file an accident report.

Stay Involved

Don’t assume that the insurance companies will resolve all the issues relevant to your collision; stay involved in the claims process. This means that you understand you insurance coverage and can recognize when your insurance company is trying to cover less than they should. Sometimes drivers experience the most problems with claims when dealing with the other driver’s insurance company. Sometimes they resist covering damages even if the police found that driver responsible for the wreck.

If insurance companies skimp on medical care, rental coverage or other claims, drivers should prepare to involve an accident attorney in the case. They know ways to prod insurance companies to honor their commitments and can take them to court if necessary.

Trends In The Insurance Quotes Marketplace In The UK – Are They Coming To Canada?

Canada UK Auto InsuranceCurrently, the trend in car insurance in the UK is for auto insurance companies to aggressively compete with each other for new business. Because people are seeking every way they can to lower their monthly expenses, one of the most popular areas to seek a discount is in their auto insurance. For this reason, UK drivers have stated in a large proportion that they will leave their current car insurance companies for another one that gives them a reduction in their rates of only $40.

For the purpose of finding savings for their car insurance, UK drivers are frequenting comparison websites more often. 25 percent of the car insurance customers in the UK do not bother to comparison shop, but 75 percent of the UK drivers aren’t just automatically renewing their policies. Because the 75 percent take the time to look into the possibility of saving some money on their car insurance, they save, on average, around $560 for the year.

Another trend in the UK is for people to seek their quotes online. Car insurance comparison websites are in abundance for UK car insurance companies, and they are welcoming the trend of UK drivers who would like to compare several quotes. Over the past year in the UK, car insurance rates have been decreasing; they have dropped by 16 percent over the last 12 months, so this is an opportune time to comparison shop.

Car insurance trends in the UK appear to have traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to the Canadian car insurance industry. Like for UK drivers, Canadian drivers will be happy to discover that their average car insurance rates are also dropping. If Canadian drivers have maintained good driving records, they will find that their rates can drop even lower than other drivers’ rates.

After a comparison search, Canadians may even have better results than their UK counterparts. A single Canadian driver who has maintained a good driving record will have hundreds of dollars in savings for the year if they compare quotes and find an auto insurance company offering lower rates. A couple who has sought a discount for insuring both of their vehicles with one car insurance company will not find it uncommon to be offered car insurance rates that will save them thousands of dollars for the year.

The important similarity between Canada and the UK is that car insurance companies know they have competition in other car insurance companies. With comparison websites as much in abundance in Canada as they are in the UK, Canadian insurance companies are seeing their customers switch car insurance companies when they are offered lower rates from a comparison website. These companies know that they must work hard to attract new clients, and the most immediate way they do this is by offering low auto insurance rates.

Up until March of this year, it appeared that auto insurance premiums were rising in the UK. Over the past months there has been a decrease, but this trend does not seem to be a long-lasting trend. Insurance experts are expecting auto insurance premiums to begin rising again next year. The only difference from previous years is that it is believed the rates will rise at a slower pace.

It seems that Canada is going to follow in the UK’s footsteps next year with an increase in car insurance rates, mostly because of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). The HST isn’t added to car insurance premiums, but it indirectly increases the price of car insurance because the HST is will be added to products that previously were not taxed. For whatever reason that car insurance premiums are expected to rise, Canadian drivers must take advantage of their ability to comparison shop for lower rates now.

Is Toronto Auto Insurance Really The Most Expensive In Canada?

Car Insurance Cost

Car Insurance Cost

This year, a new survey has determined that Toronto is the most expensive city in North America. Last year, Toronto came in at number 18 but dramatically moved up 17 spots to reach number one. It’s not surprising that Toronto auto insurance really is the most expensive in Canada.

The Size of the Population

One reason that Toronto has such high rates is because the population is much higher there than in other cities. As the population increases, car insurance companies begin to raise their rates because with more people on the roads, there are more chances to be the cause of an accident. With more vehicles in a small area, the roads become more congested. Being in close proximity causes a higher risk of a car accident.

As the population rises, the incidences of car thefts rise, also. Criminals are stealing cars for several reasons with the most common reasons being:

  • To sell the vehicle outside of the country
  • To sell the vehicle’s parts
  • To drive around for a while
  • To use while committing other crimes
  • To sell to other unsuspecting Canadians

When an area is prone to having its vehicles stolen for the reasons listed above or any others, their auto insurance rates will be higher than in areas with less car theft.

Instances of Fraud

Auto insurance fraud is prevalent in Toronto, and this is another reason that auto insurance is so expensive in this city. The numbers of fraudulent claims filed under the Accident Benefits coverage was found to be so widespread that the government lowered the limits that people must purchase of this coverage. As the auto insurance companies lose a significant amount of money to fraud, they pass the costs along to their current customers.

The Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO)

When an auto insurance company denies a claim, the policy holder may appeal and the FSCO will be the mediator. In one case, an intoxicated individual used riding in a limousine coach as an opportunity to stand on his head in the moving vehicle. This particular person sustained highly serious injuries in the process of performing this dangerous action for the entertainment of his friends.

The man in the above scenario was denied payment by his insurance company. He subsequently won his appeal as the FSCO reversed the auto insurance company’s decision. The auto insurance company may have been required to pay this particular individual millions of dollars. Every time this kind of sequence of events takes place, the other auto insurance clients pay for it with higher rates.

Teenagers

The group of people who receive the highest quotes for auto insurance no matter where they live are teenagers. They will receive even higher quotes in Toronto than other drivers in the city, and boys will receive higher quotes than girls. The teenagers are inexperienced, and that is the reason that auto insurance companies charge high rates. Boys receive the very highest rates because they are more likely to be involved in an accident than the girls are.

Compare Auto Insurance Quotes

The fact that auto insurance can be so high in Toronto means that people need to spend some time seeking quotes from several auto insurance companies. The fact that Toronto has so many auto insurance companies that need to obtain more and more clients over the years means that Canadians can possibly find auto insurance for much lower prices than they are currently paying. They will receive several highly accurate quotes, and they will even receive these quotes for free from an auto insurance broker.

Is it Still Worth Driving a Car in Toronto?

Toronto Skyline

Toronto Skyline

Toronto is a bustling capital city sprawling over 630 km2 and home to some 2.48 million citizens according to the 2006 Canadian census.  Toronto is s also widely believed to be the safest large metropolitan area in North America. Recent estimates peg our great city at close to three million strong. Like any other modern urban city, Toronto is home to many fine restaurants, museums, attractions, clubs and retail shops. With so much to offer, it is little wonder Ontarians and people from all over Canada choose to make Toronto their home.

Toronto Traffic

Toronto Traffic

With so many people and the shear size of the city, owning a car can be a real conundrum. Toronto residents may struggle to identify just why they should or should not own a car while living in Toronto. With so many considerations as to owning a car while in Toronto, residents might well ask: is it still worth driving a car in Toronto?

To answer the question definitively, each motorist must determine if the pros outweigh the cons or the cons outweigh the pros. So let’s take a look at the pros and cons to help you make a decision if it is still worth driving a car in Toronto.

Pros:

Freedom to Come and Go as Needed

Push a button, up come the door locks. Put a key in the ignition and on turns the motor. With destination in mind, you can be on your way in just a few moments. You don’t have to hoof it to the nearest TTC station. Your transportation awaits whenever you need.

Ability to Move Items On Demand

Moving from one place to another in Toronto is made easier with a car. Without your own private transportation, you must rely on others or hire a professional moving service. In addition, last minute favors can be redeemed by picking up a friend in need.

Being a Designated Driver

If you have your own car, you can be the responsible one driving your friends home from a party.

Rapid Travel from One Place to Another

Having you own car in Toronto means having the ability to go when you want. It also means taking the most direct route. Driving your own car in Toronto allows you to choose the best way to get from Point A to Point B, without having to make unnecessary stops.

Control of Travel

Just as with planning your own route comes the ability to make on-the-spot decisions. Perhaps you see something that catches your eye. Or have a sudden, urgent need to visit the bathroom. Driving your own car in Toronto lets you stay in control.

Can Make Extra Money as a Delivery Driver

With the rising cost of everything, money can be tight. And having your own car in Toronto is another money making stream. You can easily pick up a part-time gig as a delivery driver.

Cons:

Expenses Exceeding $2,000 Per Year

Owning a car anywhere in Canada can be costly. Every month, you’ll put money into your automobile in the form insurance and gas. What’s more is the cost of periodic maintenance.

Repair Costs

Speaking of maintenance, no machine runs perfectly forever. Repair costs can be very expensive. They seem to come at the most inopportune time. Repairs not covered by warranty are even more unpleasant.

Using the TTC

The Toronto Transit Commission can be a lot easier on the wallet than the cost of owning your own car. Using the TTC is a good way to keep monthly travel expenses down.

Don’t Work Outside the Home

Toronto residents that work from home have less need for a vehicle. Spending money on an automobile in monthly loan payments and insurance for it to sit on the street doesn’t make sense.

Restricted to Public Transportation

Though the TTC may be less expensive, you must travel on its schedule rather than your own.

Weather Conditions

Toronto winters can be brutal. Snow can cover a car in no time flat. And that means digging and scraping in the frigid cold.

Distracted Driving – Auto Accidents, And Your Car Insurance

Different insurers will offer different penalties, different forgiveness clauses and different rules regarding your insurance rates, but it is just about impossible to find an insurer that won’t penalize you at all for things like distracted driving and auto accidents.

You can be a teenager with no job, you can be found not at fault in a dozen accidents, but if you’re dealing with something like a distracted driving charge, you’re going to be facing much steeper fees and penalties from your insurer. Here are some tips to make sure that you stay safe and, if you do get in an accident, you’ll be less likely to be found at fault.

Clear Your Vision

windshield distractionIt’s important to keep a dashboard and windshield viewing space free of clutter, dirt, grime and other visible distractions. A smudge on the windshield can look like a vehicle about t-bone you out of the corner of your eye, so keep your windshield clean, keep your dashboard clean and try not to dangle a bunch of junk from your rear-view mirror. When you look out the front of your car, you should see nothing but road.

Keep Your Car in Check

Maybe you can live with worn brake pads, maybe you’ve got the timing just right and you can get a few more months out of them. The problem is that the courts don’t determine fault based on who’s the better driver. They determine fault based on things like whether or not your brake pads are in check. If a sober driver causes an accident with a driver who’s had a drink or two, you can guess who’s paying. Think about what will keep your car safe, and think about what it’s going to look like to the courts.

Never Let an Accident Happen

Vehicular AccidentThere’s a line of thinking, a dangerous line of thinking, that says you may as well let some jerk in a Mercedes rear end you. He’ll likely pay out the nose for it while you make off with a little stiffness but no permanent damage and a nice big settlement on the table. Brilliant, in theory, but let’s consider the facts: A guy in a Mercedes can afford a great lawyer. Any accident can lead to serious injury, no matter how small. Any accident can result in your being found at fault and losing money. If you’re found at fault, your insurance rates go up, and up, and up. Avoid any and all accidents, never get trapped into the foolish line of thinking that it’s worth it to take a hit for the chance at a settlement. That’s not a bet worth taking.

Know the Laws

If you’re noticing a pattern here, it should be clear that our recurring motif is this: No matter how innocent you are, the only thing that really matters to your insurance provider is whether or not the courts think you’re innocent. If they think that something is your fault, then your insurance rates are going to be higher. You should know never to have open containers of alcohol in your car, never to have any alcohol in driver’s reach, not to have a DVD player mounted and playing in the front seat and so on. You should also refrain from, say, using headphones to listen to music in the car and you should always keep a pair of sunglasses on hand. Staying safe on the road is one thing, staying safe from the law means checking all of your facts and covering all of your bases. No matter how safe a driver you may be, proving it to the courts is a whole other matter entirely.

Shop Around

Comparison ShoppingAt the end of the day, maybe the best way to get lower fees on your insurance is to simply shop around. If you are found at fault in an accident, your best bet may be to simply find an insurance provider who is more forgiving. If your current provider refuses to lend you any wiggle room, even after several years of paying on time and keeping your coverage without incident, then you should probably just abandon them and go with a provider who is more understanding. There’s no point in paying more when you don’t have to. That provider may have been perfect for you when you had a clean record, but now you don’t, now you have different needs, and now it’s time to move on.

Buying insurance isn’t as tricky a problem as many people would have you believe, and the truth is that they’re not doing you a favour by charging you a little less here and there. Insurers suffer a lot of bad press and they need a lot of customers to stay in business. They need you just as much as you need them, in other words, so understand that you do have some buying power. Even if you’ve been found at fault in an accident, even if your record’s not perfect, you always have options.
